CorneReD Buy Oil ....

Hello Folks,

Well ... another road trip has wound down.

The road across the top of the US, down the west coast and the back half way across the middle and then up the middle exposes you to the history of the US ... both past and present.

It also serves as an introduction to a large number of folks you meet along the way as well as fellow travelers hoping to find themselves in their travel experiences.

The most prevalent historical element out there, on the road that I traveled, is how the US, before the mid to late 1800s, is really the story of the native Indian (and I use Indian on purpose ...as opposed to American), the Mexican and Spanish, followed by the explorers, followed by the masses moving west.

You can easily see this by pulling out your Atlas and name checking the towns ... Indian names abound, French names to some degree across the top ... Indian names abound as you go south down the coast and you get the odd French one and soon many Mexican and Spanish ones; as you get moving east from Santa Barbara an then north from Oklahoma City.

In Oklahoma I crossed the Chisholm trail - once the main north south corridor for driving huge herds of cattle to the Northern market .... cattle that were rounded up on the free range for the great annual drive ...today this trail is impassable because of barb wire, local and interstate highways, railway tracks, transmission and distribution lines, etc.

Today the drives would be made by cattle car ... but no need for that ... we raise thousands in small areas on factory farms .... feeding them corn and pumping them full of growth hormones, etc ... like professional athletes ... and there is a comedic irony there ...

The Spanish, Mexicans and the native Indians were defeated by the same force ... not the will of the white man moving west ... but the very force that drove the white man west ... mercantilism, capitalism, economic Darwinism ... whatever the catch phrase ... however, all is not lost .... the Indian may still win ... as the saying goes, `evolution is not over`

The native Americans were always good stewards of the land ... only hunting and growing what they needed to sustain themselves ...

We .... the descendants of those that pushed madly westward are proving to be very poor stewards ... not only of the land ... but of finance, energy, immigration, and agriculture ... I could easily add education, the arts, health, physical education ... but let me use agriculture as an example ...

An Indian staple was maize ... or corn.

Today corn is killing us ... in more ways than one ...maybe it`s Crazy Horse`s last laugh.

Corn is being produced in record quantities ... farmers are subsidized to grow it through past agreements to keep farmers solvent and on the farm.  Growing corn year after year is an energy intensive process ... meaning it takes tons of fertilizer and insecticide and herbicide to grow this crop ... the fertilizer, insecticide and herbicide are produced from ... imported oil.

The corn once produced, generally speaking, is either used as cattle feed, used in foodstuffs or used to produce ethanol - there is an intense lobby going on right now to increase the percentage of ethanol in fuel from the current limit of 10% to 15% ... meaning in all states ... in some states this is the case right now ...although you need a flex fuel model engine to use it ...I`ll return to this in a minute ...

Fuel as cattle feed ...cattle can`t digest corn properly .. they are grass eaters ... however we can give cattle an implant which enhances their gut chemistry so corn can be digested .... this along with growth hormone plus other pharmaceutical based compounds to fight disease and infection .... diseases and infections as a result of the close proximity they find themselves in, with their brethren, on the factory farm ... as opposed to the free range ...

Archer Daniels Midland is a food engineering firm ... for want of a better term ... you know why corn flakes stay crunchy in milk for so long ... they have been engineered ... by ADM ... ADM also did the research that allowed fructose and glucose (dextrose) to be used in all our canned and boxed foodstuffs ... super sweeteners .... this stuff is tens of times sweeter than natural sugar ... is more calorie dense ... and affects the bodies insulin-carbohydrate mechanism differently .... those who are not eating fresh food daily ... those who buy everything processed or eat out a lot .... are consuming a corn based diet ... one of the main reasons why obesity is on the rise .... and of course to produce those tons of cereal and foodstuffs that are based on corn and use corn derived sugar ... it takes a lot of imported oil ... are you sensing a trend ...
With regard to ethanol production ... it is heavily subsidized by the Federal and some state governments ... we take corn, produce a mash, ferment it, distill it to produce ethanol ... using imported oil to do this...we then take the resulting ethanol and add it to .... imported oil ... so we use imported oil ...to make ethanol .... to add to more imported oil ... and the government pays industry to do it based on already subsidized corn production ....

Corn is not only killing people, it`s killing the economy ... and it`s causing a huge dependence on foreign oil ... and is the indirect cause of off shore drilling... which is also subsidized.

I had mentioned going from 10% - 15% corn production ... that means taking current arable land ... used for growing grain, green veggies, root veggies .. and converting it to corn ...thus getting more subsidized corn production ... increasing the need for imported oil, making us fatter and reducing domestic production of the very things we need and should be eating ...

This is just one instance where agricultrural policy, energy policy and public health policy intertwine and make no sense ....

If you are what you eat ... some of us are a filed of corn or a barrel of oil ... depending on how you look at it ...

The one worrying thing that I take back from my last two trips to the US ... is that the knowledgeable folks and the ones who really care, and are trying to get an articulate message out there, are being drowned out by a very vocal minority who are playing to the fears of those whose minds are made up for them by talk radio and cable news and daytime television  ....

Either something `bad`is going to happen and people will shake their heads and wonder what that was all about and common sense will return ... or things will slowly drift as they are until the mess is bad enough that a charismatic individual will come along and post-Katrina will look like a quilting bee ... from that they will recover as well ... but the world will sink and recover with them .... and that`s simply not an event I want to experience ... nor do I want my children to experience ....

So ...to all my friends in the US ... and there are many ... please help someone get off Rush ... help someone turn on to an economist, a scientist, a real journalist, a real engineer ... and then watch them elect someone who is informed by these same `real`; people .... you won`t regret it ... and neither will we ... standing outside ... looking in ...scratching our heads ...

One last thing ... another `jesus is lord` billboard is not going to help anyone; another billboard calling on voters to get rid of politicians because they are following a black Muslim not born in America is not going to help anybody; an education combined with tolerance and understanding will lead to those billboards not being put up in the first place .... and will eventually lead to co-existence ...

To quote from verse 1776 of the Krome Koan,

`To outsiders, US voting is similar to driving a car .. choose R to go backward ... choose D to go forward ...`

Looking forward to the next road trip,

Breakfast in America ...

Hello Folks,

After another Google session I discovered that Bryant`s is the best breakfast place in Memphis ... voted on by those who go there I guess ... we`re talking biscuits ... home made biscuits ..., cornbread, pulled pork, potatoes ... and ... gravy ... is gravy a beverage .... there`s nothing green on this plate ....

I drove over there late in the AM .... I mean the cycle does get to you .. especially the `repeat`part of it .. the drive took me through parts of Memphis that I had never seen ... lots of ribbon wire, dust and decrepitude ... it looked like a former war zone ... and just maybe it was .... the `Jesus is lorders` vs. those who just want to live their lives in peace ...

I ordered a ham and cheese omelet and sat down at one of the booths .... and ... BAM ...it was there ....

I started eating it ... waiting for the obvious sign or clue that I was supposed to be there ... I am sitting back to this lady who is having her breakfast, lunch and dinner all at once ... so nothing is happening ... no dead phones ringing ... no turned off radios talking ...I finish the omelet and get up to leave ... I trip over the outstretched leg of the woman who was dining just behind me ... and down I go like a sack of potatoes ... for the second time on this trip ...

She is all apologetic ... I am as well ... and then I notice she has a Jackson Delta CD on the table ... she is reading the booklet ... I asked her where she got the CD ... she said Bobby Watson gave it to her ... I said Bobby Watson .... I know him ... in fact I am currently living in Peterborough ... she says Bobby and her husband used to play together ... her husband is a bass player ... I was just about to say it was a small world when over comes another diner .... did I hear you folks talking about Bobby Watson ....

I sad yes we were .... he says ... I knew Bobby when he was here in Memphis 10 years ago ... I`d do anything for Bobby Watson ... in fact I have some of his gear .... well what is it ... it`s a guitar and amp ... well I could take it back with me .... no shit ... I just happen to have it with me ....

We all break out in laughter .... life is funny that way he says .... funnier than you think or even know I thought ... we spent the next few minutes chatting about Bobby until it was time to move on ... I moved the gear into the truck ... said goodbye .... and headed on down the road .... which as we all know ....  goes on forever ...

Oh yeah .... I`ll be hitting repeat a lot tonight .... I`ll probably only have one last thing to say tomorrow ... as for the `watcher` .... well ... `it`s` still there ... waiting to test me again on the next adventure .... like Stephen King has demonstrated again and again ... you can`t defeat evil ... you can only push back on it ... and when you do push back, it pops out somewhere else ... for my `friends`on the road ... I don`t know who they are ... but it is comforting to know they exist and are out there .... and for the `watcher`s` sentinels ... they are always out there ... reminding me that the road is never solitary and that they also go on forever .... and beyond ...

The Tell A Phone Boogie ....

Hello Folks,

I left Elk City, OK at dawn and arrived in Memphis as part of a convoy ... let me tell you ... it just keeps getting more strange ... the Doors predicted that .... 'faces come out of the rain ... when you're strange ....'

The drive across the top of the Texas panhandle and on through Oklahoma and Arkansas is remarkable in the sense that they wear their hearts not only on their bumper stickers, like the rest of the country, but also on their billboards .... which are a hell of a lot easier to read at 80 mph ....

There seemed to be three main themes ... Jesus is lord .... and this was displayed not in a gentle comforting way but in gigantic letters and with reference to a bible book and verse ... if you don't agree with the statement and/or the reference, bad things will happen ... that old testament 'eye for an eye' thing ... this kind of Jesus and/or his followers you do not want to meet .... their ancestors would have loved the inquisition ....

The next most popular billboard display was for liquor/beer, gentleman's clubs ... followed closely by guns/ammo .... I concluded that this was a direct follow-on from the 'Jesus is lord' billboards .... liquor/beer was the sacrament, gentleman's club was the church (after all women are simply non-thinking objects of desire), and guns and ammo are required to enforce the commandments of this philosophy ... besides being a second amendment instrument of choice ...

The third most popular billboard was highlighting local politicians; those that should not be 'favored with voter's attention' .... and it was quite clear that, if a supporter of 'Jesus is lord', had worked up enough fervor at the 'church', had enough liquor (ingested), had their guns with them and loaded ... how they would handle these 'politicians' that should be removed from office .... fascinating ....

I was passing close to Bentonville, AR when the odometer rolled over to this ....

Wow ... the home of WalMart ... who knew .... America's shopping center .... it was Washboard Hank, who declared to the audience at The Rusty Snail on the 31 December 2007 that, 'only an asshole would shop at WalMart' ... well, if that's true .... and I can only rely on Hank for this .... this has serious ramifications for most North Americans .... Hank has always been an excellent judge of anatomy ...

About halfway across AR, the skies darkened and the rains came ... I was following a ... yes ... a WalMart 18 wheeler .... I pulled out to pass ... and I couldn't .... there was another WalMart 18 wheeler in front of me and now one behind ... I pulled back in back behind the one I wished to pas and there I was embedded in a convoy of WalMart 18 wheelers ....

At first I was ticked off .... tried to find an opening to pass .... pulled out to the shoulder a bit ... until we got to a large sweeping curve on the interstate ... now I could a great distance in front and behind me on opposite sides .... and as far as the eye could see it was 2 lanes of ..... you guessed it .... WalMart trucks ... I was embedded and well hidden from view in amongst this melamine convoy .... and then I realized they were not a threat but were actually shielding me from 'the watcher' .... and this continued to the Arkansas/Tennessee border ... at which time they peeled off and I proceeded across the bridge and quickly to the Gen-X Inn ... unobserved as far as I could tell ....

I checked into ...are you ready for it .... Room 206 ... yeah, it had to be .... the message light was flashing on the phone .... no one knew I would be in that room so I listened to it knowing it would be for the previous occupant .... it wasn't .... some sort of computer generated or masked voice simply said .... 'eat, drink, boogie, repeat ....' WTF ....'eat, drink, boogie, repeat' .... another riddle it seems ....

But again, Google is your friend, so a quick search revealed that this phrase among other things is the catch phrase of the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street .... so I grabbed the trolley and it was off into the sunset to the Rum Boogie Cafe ....

The Chris Dodd band was playing .... I ordered the Gator Gumbo and a Blue Moon ... and settle in waiting for who knows what to happen ...it didn't take long ...it seems it never does .... Chris was playing a Hendrix tune ... doing a great job .... Little Wing .... all of a sudden the bar wall phone rings ...

only one problem ... the phone is a prop ... one of those crank jobs with an ear-piece and a horn you speak into permanently mounted on the front ... the band stops playing ... the crowd doesn't know what's going on ... the maitre' d eyeballs are three times their size ...

I walk to the phone and answer it .... that computer generated voice says, ...'Bryants breakfast' ... what the hell`s that ... orange juice!!!! ...another mystery without any clues ...

I did figure it out ... today will be the most interesting of all .... if I can survive the cycle ... eat, drink, boogie ...repeat ....

To quote from verse 1566 of the Krome Koan,

'I bet Jesus would have used his turn signal ....'

I love the nightlife ....

X Marks the Spot ...

Hello Folks,

I left Winslow this AM continuing beside and on top of Route 66.

There was a sharp rise in elevation just east of Albuquerque ... rising high enough to support grazing for horses and cattle and cool and wet enough to support large forest tracts .... the land gradually became more barren and desert like as I made my way towards Amarillo, TX ....

The day started off sunny and cloudless but approaching Amarillo the horizon became very dark ... the kind of dark that portends bad things and sorry outcomes ... nightmares become reality ....

That's when I saw the lighthouse .... I know ... driving across the great plains and I saw a lighthouse ... too much cloaking liquid ..?? ... it must have been one fine morning, indeed. Not really ... I don't need the tequila now ... I am being slowly drawn in to Memphis ... but have a look here ....

And then I start seeing more of them ... that's when the horizon turned black and it started to rain ... could these plains lighthouses be friends ... sanctuaries ... Billy had mentioned them .... like the one in Santa Barbara, are they trying to point something out to me ...

I now start to see more wind turbines ... and I realize I am in a corridor of plains lighthouses and these turbines ... I am protected ... shielded ... I glance to my left to see the wind generator and I notice one is not turning ... I glance again and I can see it is Wind Generator 10 ... and then jut as quickly it starts rotating again ... that's odd ... yeah, right, what isn't ... but on the assumption that it did mean something what was it ... Wind Generator 10 ...

Sirius Radio is on ... I have it on the punk/new wave station ... a song begins to catch my attention ...'so let's sink another drink ...' ...... '...if I had a chance, I'd ask one to dance ....'  I know that tune  ... I haven't heard this version ...  it ends and then the DJ runs down the playlist for the last 30 minutes .... 'and that last tune was the classic, 'Dancing With Myself' .... in it's original version by Mr. Idol when he was with Gen-X .... Gen-X ... wind Generator 10 .... Gen X .... then I see a sign ... Phillips 66 ... so it appears I am on friendly ground for the moment ...

OK ... so what ... I am thinking about this and the DJ starts rapping about a charity event in Memphis coming up in November ... and that Idol will be there for that ... and when there he alway's stays at the Gen X Inn ... so that's it ... a little bit of sanctuary in Memphis .... apparently the 'watcher' has enemies and therefore I have friends ... Memphis will be interesting ... now who are these friends ...

I have pulled up in Elk City, OK .... home of the National Museum of Route 66 ... oh yes where am I staying tonight ... in a Motel 6 on Route 66 ... what room ... 134 .... but 4+3-1 = 6 .... it's never easy ....

The Route of Evil ...

 Hello Folks,

I left Santa Barbara early this AM motoring through Ventura and onto Ventura Highway ....

and then continued east bound on the periphery of the creeping chaos that is an extension of LA  ... the land rose from seal level to 2500 feet and the terrain quickly became desert ... the temperature rose from 18 C to 35 C in very short order ... the sun was beating down ... but it felt, even in the confines of the vehicle, as it was actually pulling the skin and the energy out of anything and everything it touched ...

The highway eventually connected with 15 North and then with 40 East .... the land started a slow rise that would peek in Arizona at 7300 feet before declining to 5000 feet at Flagstaff ... gateway to the south rim of the Grand Canyon ...

'Outlaw Country' was booming from Sirius 63 ... about 5 hours into the drive ..... it was that deja vu all over again thing ... something was familiar .. yet, it wasn't .... there was a great song playing on the radio .. 'take the highway that is the best ..I turned it up.. . 'get your kicks ... on Route 66 ....'. I should have known ... yes deja vu alright ... I was driving on parts of the old 'mother road' as I cruised on 40 East ... except I was doing it in reverse chronology to the travelogue that is the song .... in other words I I was driving anti route 66 .... and I know you have picked up on this already .... 66 .... no wonder I was on 'this' road to Memphis ... was anti route 66 ... 'Route 666' .....

I turned the radio down so I could think .... I was headed to Flagstaff ... that was the plan ... I was just at the outskirts of town when I picked up the melody of a familiar song ... '.... don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy ...' I turned it up '.... standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona ...'.  I got the message ... I kept on truckin' 90 minutes past Flagstaff to Winslow ...

But it got better ... the only vacancy in town was at ... get ready ... Motel 6 ... the room number ... you already know ... 106 ... oh, the 'watcher' is getting close ... it now seems likely that 'it' wanted me in Memphis all along ... that may have been what all the difficulty was with traveling west bound beyond Chicago ...

I am on the 'watcher's road', in the 'watcher's motel', and in the 'watchers room' .... it appears that I may have a date with destiny ...

Hair Of The Blog ....

Hello Folks,

Feeling over confident I went down to the harbor this AM ... not knowing this was the day of the Annual Santa Barbara Harbor Festival .... it was one of those classic cloudless, deep blue infinity sky days ... I walked among the many tents ... I strolled out by the fisherman selling lobster and sea urchin ... and then I turned to walk back...and realized ... I can't ... the watcher's people were here on the wharf ... the live seafood in small children's pools and large pails knew I was there ... the pelicans flying in a loose chevron ..they knew I was there ... coming down here was a terrible mistake ....

Only one thing to do ... I needed cloaking fluid ... I jumped down 10 feet to a lower jetty ran across it to a hoist and scrambled up that to the front of Brophy's ... I ran back across the front and towards the back and then up the stairs onto the outside balcony ... I ordered a Margarita ... and destroyed that ... another one ... destroyed that ... another one ... and finally I was invisible ... I moved to another part of the bar .... good ... they didn't know where I had gone ...

It is quite clear that my move to Memphis is not a popular one and I can only prepare myself for what may ensue on the drive east starting tomorrow ...

I will have to stock up on cloaking fluid .... it's going to get interesting ... maybe I should alter my appearance .. dye my hair ... gain some weight ... cut my hair ... no ... I've done that already ... I'll have to meet this head on ...

... a song is playing in the background ... someone is carrying a boombox ... ' ...it increases my paranoia ...' ... I try to locate the source ... and then I do locate it ... it's coming from a boat just across from me ... I raise my zoom lens to get a better look and I see the boat is named 'Cros' .... '   I feel ... like I owe it to someone ....'

To quote from verse 1266 of the Krome Koan.

Heading to the 'middle' east tomorrow ...

Beach Blank It ..... Bingo!

Hello Folks,

Thinking back on the visits to the old mission and the presidio .... it seemed to me that I had missed something ... clues that were there but that I was not picking up ...

I went down to the harbor with a thermos of cloaking liquid .... and sat on the beach to mull it over.  The pelicans were just floating back and form ... the skimmers were on the beach ... the sea gulls were their usual vocal selves ... and the boat traffic into and out of the harbor was non-stop ...

I went over what I knew about the Spanish history in the new world and compared that to the development of the US as a nation .... there was a time when Spain claimed all the land west of the Mississippi ... and the United States recognized this and in return claimed all the land east of the Mississippi ... and the hubris in this is self evident ...

As I was sitting there photographing the pelicans flying in and out  .... my attention was grabbed by a young lady in a bikini walking along the beach .... she wasn't coming towards me but would pass in front of me on her way to one of the many boats in the marina ... she had an iPod  ..to which she was listening .. she was singing along .... I could make out some of the words .... 'that little boy's smile ....' as she comes closer it becomes more distinct and I can get some sense of melody, '....slow southern style ...', she passes in front of me and I hear this ...'a new religion that'll bring ya to your knees ...... black velvet if you please' ....

I recognize the song now ... but it gets me to thinking .... 'new religion' ... the song is about Elvis ... rock 'n' roll after Elvis was accused of being the devil's music ... records were burned .... Elvis was from Tupelo but had moved to Memphis .... Memphis was on the Mississippi ... on the east side or the US side of the river .... the former dividing line between the Spanish and American claims .... I had been bombarded with messages, both overt and subtle, containing the number of the beast ...

There was only one thing to do .... I was going to have to very quietly go east to Memphis .... there is something there that will make sense of all this ....

The young girl head turns 450 degrees ... just like that scene in 'The Exorcist' ... and looks my way ... without taking her ear-buds out she says in a louder than normal voice, '... we both will be received in Graceland....', I reply, 'You're The Devil in Disguise' .... she walks on ...

Long distance information indeed .....
